ALEPH I
Watercolor
30" x 24"
part of the collection of Ms. E. Berkowitz

The first letter in the ten commandments, which states the oneness of God, is also the first letter of the Hebrew Alphabet.   It is composed of three parts:    A "yud" resting on earth, another "yud" in heaven and a "vav" which connects both heaven and earth.    The kabbalists regard the "aleph" as the spiritual root of all letters, encompassing in its essence the whole alphabet.
